Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 Fairy Tale Retellings I have read or are currently on my TBR list

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a book blog meme created by the girls at The Broke and the Bookish

When I saw what the topic for today’s Top Ten Tuesday was I had to log in from my summer hiatus to blog about my favorite fairy tale retellings that I have read, and have yet to read. I love fairy tales, and I am always happy when a new version comes out. I am also especially thrilled when I find a new book/story that has all the charm of a “fairy tale” but is entirely new and unique.  Here are my top ten picks for this week:

1- Snow Glass Apples- by Neil Gaiman (READ)

I love this re-twisting of Snow White. It’s absolutely Gaiman-esque and perfect. I am lucky enough to own one of the original printed copies (pictured above that had a limited printing of only 5000). I had it signed by Neil while at his signing for The Ocean at the End of the Lane and he was surprised to see such an “old story” as he called it.

2- The Sleeper and the Spindle- by Neil Gaiman (READ)

This is a beautifully illustrated retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Once again Neil Gaiman has been able to take the story and make it his own. Quite the modern tale, where who does the saving isn’t a prince.

The Night Circus

3- The Night Circus- by Erin Morgenstern (READ)

This is not a retelling, but I do think it might fall under the “fairy-tale” umbrella, at least to me. I LOVE this book. I have read it over a dozen times now, and it still enchants me every time. If you have not read it yet, you are in for a treat.

4- Beyond the Glass Slipper (Ten Neglected Fairy Tales to Fall in Love With)- by Kate Wolford (TBR)

I bought this book just before I moved to my new home. It has been packed away now for almost 2 years (as we are still trying to get our house in ship-shape). I recently unpacked it and it has been peering at me from my living room bookcase. I think the time has come to learn some new tales.

5- Beauty- by Robin McKinley (TBR)

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale, and I found this book on my bookself and had not realized it was there, patiently waiting for me to open it. It’s now be brought over to my nightstand to be read in the very near future.

6- Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister- by Gregory Maguire (READ)

Here is a retelling of Cinderella that I really enjoyed and caused me to want to continue to read all of Gregory Maguire’s future books. Expect twists and a very different point of view.

7-The Rose and the Beast (Fairy Tales Retold)- by Francesca Lia Block (READ)

I bought this book many years ago, and read it in one sitting. I loved how each tale is completely new and its own even though it is still technically a retelling. Here you will find Snow White, Beauty, and Sleeping Beauty.  I might just have to pull this one-off the shelf and re-read it.

8-  The Sisters Red- by Jackson Pearce (TBR)

A little Red Riding Hood retelling. Just came upon it on GoodReads recently and now it’s a must read for me.

9- Cruel Beauty- by Rosamund Hodge (TBR)

I have heard wonderful things about this book and this author. Plus how can I pass up on a Beauty and the Beast retelling?

10-Before Midnight- A Retelling of Cinderella- by Cameron Dokey (TBR)

A Cinderella retelling, that was recommended to me via GoodReads. It looks lovely and I hope I can read it sometime soon.

Let’s chat fairy tales! What are some of your favorites? Which retellings so you enjoy?
